SassyCove - A Personal Story

Hi there! My name is Karen, and I’m the founder of SassyCove. First of all, thank you for visiting my site. I’d like to take a moment to share a personal story with you — one that’s at the heart of why I started SassyCove.

In early 2014, I landed a job as a quality manager at a manufacturing company in Hong Kong. I was thrilled, not only because it was a role that played perfectly to my detail-oriented nature (finally, I was getting paid for my OCD tendencies!), but also because it meant I no longer had to wear uniforms. For the first time, I could express myself through business attire. Or so I thought.

Back then, women’s business attire options were frustratingly limited. If you’ve ever worked in a corporate environment, you’ll know the struggle: endless racks of uninspired blazers and dull slacks. Determined to feel confident and professional, I started experimenting with mixing and matching pieces I already had. To my surprise, this simple decision became a game-changer. My creativity didn’t just elevate my wardrobe — it earned me trust and respect from colleagues across our design, production, and quality teams. I’d like to think that’s because my outfits mirrored the attention to detail and care I brought to my work.

I owe much of that creativity to my mom. Every time I visited Malaysia, we’d go shopping for office wear together. She’d excitedly help me brainstorm ways to pair tops and bottoms, always emphasizing how small details could make a big impact. Those shopping trips were more than just retail therapy; they were bonding moments that I cherish deeply.

But life has a way of throwing curveballs. In mid-2016, the company I worked for was sold, and 180 of us were retrenched. With no promising job opportunities in sight, I returned to Malaysia and reluctantly transitioned into freelancing as a web designer. While I tried to make it work, I felt utterly disconnected. I missed the structure, the purpose — and yes, even dressing up.

Then, in May 2019, my world turned upside down. My mom passed away. Just two weeks before she left us, she asked me a question that shook me to my core: “Why aren’t you starting your own business?” Her words were startling, especially since I grew up in a generation where parents encouraged stable jobs over entrepreneurial dreams.

After her passing, I couldn’t stop thinking about her question. I decided to take a leap of faith and try my hand at running an online business. But let me be honest: the journey was anything but smooth. I failed. Repeatedly. I started doubting myself, wondering if I was cut out for entrepreneurship. Just when I was on the verge of giving up, something shifted.

One morning, as I sat in my pajamas scrolling through a sea of motivational quotes, a thought struck me like lightning: “You used to dress up so nicely for work. Why aren’t you dressing up for your own business?”

My initial response was defensive: “Well, I’m just working from home.” But the silence that followed felt louder than any rebuttal. It was in that silence that clarity emerged. If I didn’t take my business seriously, how could I expect anyone else to? Dressing up wasn’t just about appearances; it was a signal to myself that my work mattered. That I mattered.

From that day forward, everything changed. I began treating my work-from-home days with the same respect I had for my corporate job. I dressed with purpose, even if no one else would see me. And you know what? My confidence soared, and so did my business.

That’s why I started SassyCove. I want to help other women, especially work-from-home entrepreneurs, reclaim their confidence and sense of empowerment through style. You don’t need to spend a fortune to look and feel amazing. With the right pieces, you can transform your mindset and take on the world — one outfit at a time.

Thank you for being here and allowing me to share my story. If you’re looking for inspiration, tips, or curated outfit picks, I invite you to visit SassyCove.com regularly. Let’s dress for the success we deserve!
